The location of this painting is Old Manor Farm located on Farmholme Road in Stonington, Connecticut. The house was built for Captain Amos Chesebrough in 1729 and remained in the family until 1951.

Although he resided and worked in New York City most of his life, Guy Pène du Bois opened a summer art school, named after himself, in Stonington in 1932. With the exception of the summers of 1936-1939, du Bois maintained his school in Stonington until 1946.

In 1945, the Metropolitan Museum of Art purchased “Cocktails,” a painting which depicts an outdoor party in Stonington. This painting was awarded the “First Altman Prize” at the National Academy of Design's 120th Annual Exhibition.
